FC SIGNS A SERVICE AGREEMENT WITH THE YEA TO JOINTLY IMPLEMENT A FOREST PLANTATION PROGRAMME

The Forestry Commission (FC) has signed a Service Agreement with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) on Wednesday, 22nd November, 2017 at the Forestry Commission Headquarters in Accra.

The signing of the Service Agreement establishes a formal relationship between the Forestry Commission and the Youth Employment Agency for the implementation of a Forest Plantation Programme, under the Youth in Agriculture and Afforestation Module.

In fulfilment of the Government’s budgetary pledge to create employment for the teeming unemployed youth, the government of Ghana has allocated funds for the development and implementation of a Forest Plantation Programme. These funds will be administered by the Agency, which is responsible for the facilitation and coordination of employment opportunities for the youth.

The YEA, after several consultations is partnering the Forestry Commission, which is the public agency mandated to undertake reforestation projects nationwide, with a good track record of successful implementation of forest plantation programmes to implement this module.

This year, the Forestry Commission through its Forest Services Division is implementing the modified Taungya System under the National Forest Plantation Development Programme which has engaged over 10000 farmers across the country and an estimated 4000 hectares of forest plantations have been established within degraded forest reserves.   

After the signing of this Service Agreement, the Forestry Commission in collaboration with YEA will recruit an estimated 15000 youth across the country that will be trained and equipped to among others, carry out:

Forest Plantation Establishment

Maintenance of existing forest plantations

Coppice Management

Enrichment Planting

Under this agreement, the Youth Employment Agency will make a monthly contribution of GHC 6000000  as support towards the implementation of this programme.
