THE INAUGURATION OF CHARCOAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GHANA

The Charcoal Chamber of Commerce Ghana which is aimed at promoting the Recognition, Regularisation and Transformation of the charcoal industry from the currently unsustainable state to a sustainable industry was inaugurated on Tuesday 9th April, 2019 at the Forestry Commission’s auditorium. Present at the meeting were the Board Chairman Brig. Gen. (RTD) Joseph Odei, Deputy Chief Executive, Mr. John Allotey, Executive Director Forest Services Division Mr. Oppon Sasu, Executive Director Wildlife Division Nana Adu Nsiah, Executive Director Timber Industry Development Division Mr. Ben Donkor, Climate Change Director Mrs. Roselyn Adjei and Mr. Agyemang Prempeh, Timber Validation Department.

Brig. Gen. (RTD) Joseph Odei, Chairperson for the occasion in his opening remark emphasized that, charcoal is an important energy source in many homes in both the rural and urban areas of the country but there is no proper regulation in Ghana especially on the indiscriminate felling of trees for charcoal production or the fleet of charcoal- laden trucks seen daily on our high ways. He hoped that after the end of the inauguration, a meaningful consensus can be made to address the challenge.

The Deputy Chief Executive, Mr. John Allotey, in delivering a speech on behalf of the Chief Executive Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie said the current threat posed by the indiscriminate harvesting of trees for charcoal production is not a threat to environmental sustainability only but also a threat to the livelihoods of the relatively large number of people who are engaged in charcoal industry. “This inauguration shouldn’t be treated as a one-day city based event for a mere declaration of an intent, it should rather serve to provide the impetus to drive it beyond the confines of bureaucratic frontiers to charcoal producing communities across the country where the real challenges are prevalent”. In concluding his speech, Mr. John Allotey declared the Charcoal Chamber of Commerce Ghana duly inaugurated.
