An inaugural ceremony had been held by Management of Kalakpa Resource Reserve (KRR) to unveil a new Ultra-modern Administrative Block and a monument of an unknown Wildlife Ranger in memory of a Resource Guard, Victor Sesi who was killed by a poacher on Sunday 8th May,2016 whilst on duty and other conservation heroes who have suffered the same fate in their line of duties. The ultra-modern Office was dedicated to Nana Kofi Adu-Nsiah the Executive Director of Wildlife Division (WD) Forestry Commission (FC) who happened to be one of the Officers who managed the park and initiated the process of acquiring a permanent Office for the station several decades ago.

The Kalakpa Resource Reserve Office had been housed in a rented accommodation since its inception about five decades ago. It was, therefore a welcoming news to staff and management as well as the residents of Abutia near Ho in the Volta Region. The edifice is one of the most modern structures in the community in recent time.

The Chairman of the function was Torgbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V (Paramount Chief of Abutia Traditional Area). In his acceptance speech, Torgbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V gave a brief history of the reserve and its benefits to the traditional area in particular and the nation as a whole. He was, however, not happy that non-natives of the community have occupied portion of the reserve and are engaged in illegal activities destroying it of late. He was of the view that, protection of the reserve was inadequate and warned that if nothing was done by the Commission to reverse the trend and relocate the communities out of the reserve, they (Traditional Authority) will have no option than to take back their land from the government.

The Chairman emphasized that, any miscreant who flouts the law will be dealt with. Torgbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V further urged the police to join force with the Park Authorities to help protect the forest.

Concluding his remarks, he pleaded with Management of FC to provide Kalakpa Resource Reserve with adequate logistics in terms of extra staff, vehicles, protective clothing, office equipment etc. to make their work easier and more productive.

Nana Kofi Adu Nsiah, Executive Director (ED), Wildlife Division represented the Chief Executive, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie of the Forestry Commission as the Guest of Honour. In his inaugural speech, the ED showed his excitement for the opportunity to be back in Kalakpa Resource Reserve. Responding to the request of inadequate logistics for the Park alluded to by the Chairman, Nana Kofi Adu-Nsiah assured the residents that there will be recruitment of more personnel to augment the staff strength. He also briefed the gathering, on the purchase of Drones by the Commission to help monitor the daily activities in the reserve. Consequently, he entreated members of the community to help the staff of Kalakpa Resource Reserve protect wildlife resources in the Park and off- reserve areas.

The District Chief Executive of Ho West, Hon. Victor Ernest Apau, corroborated the speeches of the previous speakers. He said, as Head of the Security of the area, he was prepared to partner the Park Authorities to enforce the laws. He urged the residents to cooperate with the Park Management. He further, stressed the need for the Forestry Commission to stamp out rosewood harvesting in the reserve.

After his speech, the Executive Director, Wildlife Division, the Paramount Chief of Abutia Traditional Area and the District Police Commander of Anyenawese were invited to unveil the monument and lay wreath in honor of all fallen Rangers and conservation heroes. The ED laid one on behalf of the Chief Executive followed by the Paramount Chief on behalf of the traditional Authority and lastly, one by the family of Victor Sesi, on behalf of all fallen Rangers.

They then proceeded to unveil the plaque and the ultra-modern office building and later commissioned a mechanized borehole which was also constructed through the initiative of the Executive Director Wildlife Division to support staff of Kalakpa Resource Reserve to access portable water.

Present at the event were: Mr. Samuel Darko Akonor, (Park Manger, Kalapa Resource Reserve), Torgbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V (Paramount Chief of Abutia Traditional Area) and his retinue of elders, Nana Kofi Adu-Nsiah (Executive Director, Wildlife Division),  Mr. Asamoah Boateng (Regional Manager, Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta Region), Mr. Alex Agyei Cudjoe ( Bui Park Manager and Former Park Manager, Kalakpa Resource Reserve), Mr. Joseph Yaw Oppong (Public Relations Manager, WD), Mr. Victor Ernest Apau (District Chief Executive) for Ho West and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)  Felicia Ayensu.

Finally, the Manager of Kalakpa Resource Reserve offered a vote of thanks. He thanked all the dignitaries for accepting to gracing the occasion. He also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to his hard-working staff for doing all they could in making the day possible. He further thanked the Residents, Chief and Elders for agreeing to help Kalakpa Resource Reserve to protect wildlife resources.
