In a collaborative effort to mark World Endangered Species Day, the Kotoka International Airport Unit, Commercial Development Unit and the Accra Zoological Gardens, all of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, held a-one-day exhibition exercise at the Arrival Hall of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The aim of the exercise was to sensitise the general public, particularly travelers and personnel at the Airport facility on the need to conserve endangered wildlife species, as well as to highlight the critical role individuals play in safeguarding natural resources and biodiversity. It was done on the theme: Celebrating the Conservation of Species.
Endangered Species Day is celebrated worldwide on the third Friday of May, each year. The Day, which fell on Friday, 16th of May, 2025, was devoted to raising awareness about the continued plight of endangered species (animals and plants) and encouraging people to take action to protect them. It also celebrates species that have been recovered because of conservation efforts.
The Organising Team, during the exercise engaged both local and international travelers, as well as other Airport personnel/stakeholders with short wildlife conservation education talks, and distributed informative conservation materials such as flyers and Ecotourism booklets.
The exhibition booth displayed various wildlife artefacts including animal skulls, skins and others to engage the KIA public.
Feedback from the participants revealed strong interest and reception in conservation issues, and patrons called for more of such interventions in future, to educate citizens on the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability.
