The Forestry Commission (FC) Board of Commissioners have undertaken an inspection exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar site.
In the past years, the Sakumo Ramsar site that stretches from Klagon, Lashibi through to Sakumono Beach has been encroached by individuals.
The delegation which was led by Rev. David Kpelle and Dr Richard Gyimah, Director of Stakeholders and Ecotourism inspected the site to check the ongoing rebuilt structures of some demolished areas by the Accra Regional Minister; Hon. Henry Quartey, the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and FC last year.
After the inspection, Mr Gustav Adu, a member of the Board commended the Greater Accra Regional Minister for a good job done.
He mentioned that there should be a physical presence of the FC to alert encroachers and individuals not to purchase lands or build structures on the site.
Mr. Umaru Farouk, Director Operations Wildlife Division (WD) also suggested that all Ramsar Site boundaries should be fenced as soon as possible.
Mr. Farouk added that, the fencing of the Sakumo Ramsar Site had been recommended in the past but didn’t see implementation but in the face of this increasing encroachment, the time is appropriate for the fencing of the core zone and critical areas of the buffer zone.
He therefore urged that, the Commission should look for innovative ways to secure funding for fencing the Sakumo Ramsar site.
The Board also visited the Forestry Commission office in the Sakumono area to check equipment seized during their mandatory patrolling.
