The Takoradi Regional Office and Kumasi Zoo of the Wildlife Division of Forestry Commission, in conjunction with the Nana Abena Boaduwaa II Foundation, and the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly have organised a 5-day program dubbed, “Wildlife Mobile Zoo, Tarkwa 2024”.
About 4,419 visitors passed through the maiden Mobile Zoo ‘Mobizoo’ programme which took place at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Basic School premises from 28th March to 1st April, 2024.
The Mobile Zoo concept is where some attractive wildlife species are temporarily gathered and restricted to a specific enclosed area, for public viewing in a city or town where a certain activity is going on and could attract public patronage.
The Easter Mobizoo event sought to promote the wildlife ecotourism sites in Ghana, conservation education on wildlife and investment opportunities for the Protected Areas.
As such, staff of the Takoradi Regional Office and Kumasi Zoo, embarked on a massive conservation education campaign in the Tarkwa area, sensitising people about the threats to wildlife and other natural resources sustenance in the country; and urged people to desist from activities that destroy and harm wildlife.
Highlighted topics included the Wildlife laws, the importance of wild animals, effects of ‘galamsey’ on natural resources, causes and effects of climate change and several others.
The Chief Executive of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly, Hon. Benjamin Kesse, was at the event to have a look at the exhibition and enjoyed the wildlife education.
The delighted Chief Executive congratulated the Forestry Commission for such a remarkable event, hoping to see more in the future.
He stressed that such programs will not only enlighten people about wildlife resources, but enhance the connectivity of humans and natural resources.
The Founder of Nana Abena Boaduwaa II Foundation, Nana Hemaa of Apinto Divisional Council, who supported the programme with some cash, the event’s grounds and accommodation for staff, among others, expressed her gratitude to the Wildlife Division, Forestry Commission, for initiating and organising such a program in Tarkwa.
She also thanked the Management of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) for granting Forestry Commission permission to use the University’s Basic School premises for the event.
She advocated and promised to see to it that the programme is organised every Easter; and praised the people of Tarkwa for their patronage.
Moreover, the Regional, District and Divisional Commands of the Ghana Police Service, Tarkwa, were also present to support the program with security. The programme had other side attractions like horse riding, face painting, bouncy castle, lime and spoon racing, sack racing, among other interesting activities.
