The Forestry Commission (FC) has organised an inter-schools quiz competition amongst four selected junior high schools at the GNAT Hall, Tamale.
This event was part of the Commission’s activities to mark this year’s edition of the International Day of Forests (IDF), which falls on March 21 each year.
The competition was organised among Tamale International School; Savanna International School; Sakasaka Basic School and Lamashegu Blk “A “Primary School.
The theme for this year’s IDF is “Forests and Innovation “.

In a statement, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tamale, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed Ahmed, said, “This day has been set aside to celebrate our forests, and its significance lies in preserving nature, which is crucial for human life. As citizens, we have a responsibility to help the Forestry Commission protect and manage our forests against challenging activities like deforestation, degradation, and climate change and we must seek smart solutions. “
He admonished the students to learn how to manage and conserve forests. “It’s a personal project for all of us, as citizens of Ghana, to assist the Forestry Commission in protecting and preserving our forests”, he said.

At the end of the quiz competition, Tamale International School emerged as the winner and went away with a cash prize of GHc5000, a desktop computer, a plaque, a certificate, IDF-branded exercise books and T-shirts, and a box of pens. Savanna International School was the first runner-up and took away a Ghc3000 cash prize, a desktop computer, a crystal plaque, a certificate, IDF-branded exercise books and T-shirts, and a box of pens. Sakasaka Basic School was the second runner up took away a cash prize of GHc 2500, a desktop computer, a plaque, a certificate, IDF-branded exercise books, T-shirts, and a box of pens whilst Lamashegu Blk A’ Primary School emerged the third runner up and received a cash prize of GHc 2000, a desktop computer, a plaque, certificate, IDF branded exercise books and T-shirts, and a box of pens.

The Deputy Chief Executive, Hon. Musah Superior, congratulated all students for participating in the competition. He said that it was good to see young people getting involved in initiatives like that and thanked the respective schools for participating and showcasing immense intelligence and knowledge on the topic for the day.
