A preparatory event for the 2022 edition of the Conference of Parties (COP), has been held at the Kempinski Hotel, Accra The event was part of the preparations towards a successful COP 27, which will be held in Sharm El -Sheikh in Egypt, from 6-18 November.
Ms. Roselyn Fosuah Adjei, Director of the Climate Change Department at Forestry Commission, welcomed all present and then invited the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson, to deliver her address.
She enumerated the support UK will give to the various events at COP 27, which includes the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership event.
H. E Thompson mentioned that Ghana will be represented at the UK’s Forest Agriculture Commodity Trade Dialogue , to give a progress report on its activities , since it was launched in 2021 , at COP 26.
She touched on the Cocoa Forest Initiative event which she said will mobilise action from global chocolate makers and cocoa producing companies.
Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor , Minister for Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR)on his part, called on all stakeholders to make this year’s event a huge success by rallying behind the MLNR to promote forest and nature-based initiatives to combat climate change.
The Minister informed the gathering that by the kind courtesies of World Bank, Partnership for Forests and other stakeholders, Ghana has once again secured a pavilion to exhibit its climate actions, engage with potential investors ,among other things.
Hon. Jinapor mentioned that the President of the Republic, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo -Addo, will join President Joe Biden of the United States and other heads of state and presidents at the Forests and Climate Leaders Summit.
There will also be a round table tropical forest ministerial event , which will be hosted by the Ministry, to discuss forest solutions to climate change.
This event brought together all stakeholders that deal with climate change and its associated issues and was also an opportunity for networking among the various stakeholders.
Ghana is a member of the Conference of the Parties (COP )on Climate Change, which is the highest decision- making body of the Convention and all member – countries are represented yearly at conferences.
The first COP meeting was held in Berlin, Germany, in March 1995.
