A group of participants from a workshop organized by New York University, Ghana, have paid a courtesy visit to the Climate Change Department of Forestry Commission.
The visit was to interact with the Climate Change Department as part of the learning avenues for the workshop on, ‘’Climate Change Governance in Africa “. The visit gave the opportunity to participants to acquire new knowledge, share ideas as well as learn from the Forestry Commission.
The participants were received by Mr.Thomas Yaw Gyambrah, Manager, and Mr. Jacob Amoako, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification Officer, both of the Climate Change Department.
Mr. Jacob Amoako presented on the mandate of the Forestry Commission which is to oversee the forest and wildlife resources in Ghana. He addressed the achievements and challenges of the Climate Change Directorate of the Forestry Commission. He stated that the landscape of Ghana is very dynamic with a lot of areas across board but deforestation and forest degradation tends to affect Ghana’s landscape. The group was enlightened on various forestry sector climate actions which includes Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) concept for the restoration of degraded landscapes, the REDD+ Program used to reduce emissions from deforestation, the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Forestry Commission and Tullow Oil Ghana to identify and develop REDD+ carbon offset projects, as well as the Green Ghana Initiative which was initiated in 2021.
