The National Timber Monitoring Checkpoint, which was originally situated at Kpong in the Eastern Region and had been in active operation for two years, has been officially relocated to the Asikuma-Boso Junction.
The relocation of the check point from Kpong to its current location was premised by the use of unapproved routes by illegal lumber operators to outwit the National Monitoring Team that was stationed at Kpong. The Rapid Response Team and Range Supervisors of the Forestry Commission are in charge of the newly -established checkpoint.
The National Coordinator of the Monitoring Team,Mr. Alex Asum, in his address charged officers manning the checkpoint to be diligent and perform their duties with the highest level of discipline, professionalism and moral integrity. He further said the current location of the checkpoint should improve the Team’s performance in arresting illegally sourced lumber and also halt all forms of illegalities in the Oti and Volta Regions.
In a related development, the National Coordinator met with the Divisional Police Commander for the Asuogyaman District , ACP Dompere, the Assistant Immigration Officer, ASI Solomon Amoa; Head of Ghana Immigration Service as well as the Head of the Ghana Revenue Authority , WO1 Honu, in charge of the Adome Bridge Barrier . All these institutions have checkpoints along the main road to the two regions , therefore Mr. Asum took the opportunity to explain to them, the ̒ ̒modus operandi ՚՚ of the National Monitoring Team. This was done in order to ensure effective institutional corroboration and also to avoid conflict whenever the Team is escorting lumber from the area to the Achimota Depot in Accra.
